The day Leo came to visit Kilanerin

| January 5, 2018

You could eat your dinner off the streets in Kilanerin on the day Leo Varadkar came to visit. Having the Taoiseach visit is a very important occasion for any local community and Kilanerin was determined to put its best foot forward for the VIP.

Kilanerin is of course home place of Minister of State Michael D’Arcy who no doubt played a big role in ensuring that Leo popped in to the North Wexford parish just a day after he returned from a trade mission to the west coast of the USA.

It’s not every day that the Head of Government comes to a village so the locals were determined to take full advantage of the visit.

They had him open an all-weather pitch at the GAA grounds, an extension to the school and another one at the Community Centre. The entire community turned out the give him a big welcome and there were flags and bunting everywhere as the parish demonstrated unashamedly that it had something to celebrate.

And Leo was thrilled to bits to be meeting local schoolchildren, families and local politicians, especially his two Wexford Ministers Mr D’Arcy and Mr Kehoe.

We know that because he was not a half an hour in the place before he tweeted a photograph of himself and the two guys declaring how happy he was to meet them.

Indeed Leo’s twitter account provided a really effective insight into his communications operation. Before he had departed the North Wexford village all his followers knew exactly where he had been for the morning, what he had opened and how delighted he was to meet the locals.  And he had a mention too for wonderful sunshine which added so much to the occasion.

A modern Taoiseach doing things the modern way but retaining some of the cornerstones of traditional politics like posing with some of the pupils when opening a school extension.
