Sinn Féin Cllr. Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin has said  that the Gorey area should have been included on the list of 23 towns which have been added to the “Rental Pressure Zone” announced by Minister Simon Coveney. This follows a motion passed at the December meeting of Gorey Municipal Council which was proposed by the Sinn Féin councillor

“I’m calling on Minister Coveney today to act on Decembers motion and include the Gorey area within the Rental Pressure Zone so that some form of rental control can be introduced.”

“The new system of rent caps will be extended to 23 towns, and to the entirety of Galway City. “The towns include nine in Co Meath, seven in County Kildare, three in Wicklow and four in Cork. “

“Housing systems such as HAP operate from County Limerick and use PRTB figures which quote rental costs at roughly 600 in the Gorey area. However, the reality on the ground is that Gorey falls within the Dublin commuter belt and rents are mostly now in the 1,000 euro region and even up to 1500 per month on DAFT websitey”

Minister Coveney needs to look at the reality of rental costs in the Gorey area-not fictitious figures”, Cllr. O’ Suilleabhain stated.
