| June 5, 2016

The ‘Oscars’ of amateur musical theatre in Ireland will be held in Killarney next month and the nominations were announced at the AIMS Choral Festival in New Ross on Sunday. Oyster Lane Theatre Group were delighted to be nominated in two categories for last year’s show Hairspray. They were up against over 45 shows across Ireland.

Suzanne O’Leary has been nominated in the Best Choreographer category. The adjudicator said she ‘made every dance look like a master class.’ Suzanne will also choreograph and direct this year’s production of Legally Blonde.

Nicola Roche was nominated as Best Supporting  Actress for her role as Velma Von Tussle. Nicola is a former Chairperson of the Group and the adjudicator said ‘Her dialogue was spot on and she commanded every scene she was in – a most wonderful performance.’

There was plenty more to celebrate too as Yvette Walsh, the Oyster Lane Secretary, is nominated for her role as Deloris Von Cartier in Sister Act with New Ross Musical Society and our ‘Jesus’ from our 2014 production of Jesus Christ Superstar, James McDermott, was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for Che in Wexford Light Opera’s recent production of Evita.

Chairperson Greg O Leary said he was delighted with the nominations, particularly for two people who have been with the Group since the beginning – Suzanne being a founder member and Choreographer since 1994 and Nicola playing ‘Cha Cha’ in our first production – Grease. He also paid tribute to last year’s Chairperson Jamie Doyle and the 2015 committee who brought such a great show to the stage.

With further nominations for Wexford Light Opera and for Enniscorthy Musical Society it was a great result for County Wexford.

The winners will be announced at a lavish ceremony at the INEC Killarney in front of a crowd of over 1,200 musical theatre participants. They take place on June 18th.
Fingers crossed!
