Members of Wexford Co. Council have backed a call on the government for the provision of a 24/7 psychiatric  unit for Co. Wexford.

Independent councillor Davy Hynes proposed a motion on the issue at the May meeting of the Council. He said that nothing sufficient was put in place following the closure of St. Senan’s.

Cllr. Keith Doyle said the problem arose as a result of policy decisions and the fact that the Department of Health feels that what has been put in place to replace St. Senan’s is sufficient  for the county.

Cllr Deirdre Wadding said it was irresponsible to close something without putting  something else in place to replace the service it provided.

Cllr George Lawlor highlighted the fact that if someone presents at Wexford General Hospital and is then referred to Waterford University Hospital  for treatment they have to go through A&E in Waterford again.
