Fifty years ago as the state marked the fiftieth anniversary of the rising a different kind of drama initiated in Wexford town with the foundation of Wexford Drama Group. The group now proudly kick start a year of celebrations to mark their fiftieth next week when their first production of 2016 hits the Arts Centre Stage.

Big Maggie the John B. Keane classic has been chosen to be the first production of Wexford Drama Group’s fiftieth year and an excellent cast has been working for many months under the direction of South East Radio’s Alan Corcoran to bring this Irish masterpiece to life.

Big Maggie has just finished an extended sell out run at the Gaiety Theatre in a professional version featuring Aisling O’Sullivan in the title role so Wexford Drama Group were delighted when they secured the rights to stage their own version of this very popular play.

The play focuses around Big Maggie Polpin and her attempts to keep her family together after the death of her husband. The dialogue crackles with hilarious, caustic putdowns as the indomitable Maggie deals with her feckless family and unwanted suitors. Everyone wants a part of Big Maggie and her property, but she has other ideas.

The play features a mix of new faces and experienced players from Wexford and stars Louise Dillon in the title role, who, according to director Alan Corcoran, gives “A performance that would rival any that have gone before”. Mr Corcoran also said that “the play has gone excellently in rehearsals and features some new faces to the stage that will turn a few eyebrows”.

The usual Wexford Drama production team surrounds this to ensure no stone is left unturned to give Wexford another excellent production to rank with any over the past fifty wonderful years.

Big Maggie is currently on the leaving certificate and this is the perfect opportunity for students to see it. This production opens at Wexford Arts Centre on Wednesday 13th of April and runs to the following Sunday and tickets are available now. Call 0539123764 or book online at wexfordartscentre.ie. The show is proudly partnered with The Yard Restaurant in Wexford Town where a special early bird deal will be available to all theatre goers on presentation of their tickets and a glass of Prosecco will be available after the show in T. Morris’ Bar to sweeten the deal.
