Former Labour Party leader, Eamon Gilmore travelled to Wexford on Friday night to attend the selection convention or Brendan Howlin who is to stand as a Labour candidate in Wexford again.

“I congratulate Brendan Howlin, on his selection as Labour’s candidate again in Wexford for the General Election’ said Mr Gilmore .

“I congratulate him also, for this week’s good budget. It was a budget that puts beyond any doubt the fact that Ireland’s economy is recovering; that the period of austerity is behind us; and that the Irish people, whose sacrifices made recovery possible, can now look forward to better days ahead.

“This week’s budget was made possible, by the four hard years of work by Labour in this Government. The difficult decisions which we made saved this State from financial ruin and brought Ireland out of its worst economic crisis since independence.  The economic recovery has been jobs-led, as Labour wished; it has been achieved while also increasing the national minimum wage by 20%, building new schools, maintaining core rates of social welfare and continuing to deliver the public services which people need’, he added..

Meanwhile an unsuccessful candidate in last year local elections in the Wexford District is to contest the general election on behalf o the newly formed Social Democrat Party. Leonard Kelly’s candidature was due to be formally announced on Tuesday morning.
