Youths fans left frustrated by inferior pitch 13/03/15

| March 13, 2015

After narrowly missing out on a promotion play off last season, Wexford Youth’s new season got off to a disastrous start with an away defeat to League of Ireland new boys Cabinteely FC.

Despite the fact that the game itself was a relatively boring 1-0 win for the home team, the major talking point from the game was the state of Cabinteely’s pitch and how on earth the ref had deemed it a playable surface prior to kick off.

Cabinteely were somewhat of a controversial choice for entry to The League of Ireland this season and the photos of their playing surface which emerged following the game will have done them no favours in terms of stemming the flow of ill will surrounding their league entry has generated.

While the new-boys put in a good performance, John McKeown firing the only goal of the game just before half time, the Youths were left bemoaning the state of the pitch which appeared rather dangerous.

Youths substitute Danny Furlong took to Twitter after the game to upload some pictures of the pitch along with the comment: ‘Result aside and congrats to Cabinteely they deserved it, but this is an embarrassment to League of Ireland Football.’

Fans of Wexford Youths were extremely frustrated with the condition of the pitch and they took to Twitter to voice their displeasure, many drawing a comparison with a Premier Division game last year between Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers following some damage to the penalty spot.

Given the state of the pitch, the opening fixture was not a proud one for League of Ireland, nor was it a proud moment for Wexford Youths slipping to defeat.
